Copenhagen Steam Railway Galop (Kobenhavns Jernbane Damp Galop)

This is program music according to contemporary manners and depicts a train ride, and the new technology sounds. Hans Christian Lumbye (1810-1874) began his musical career at the age of 14 as a military trumpeter with the regiment in Odense then came to Ryttergarden in Copenhagen. In 1840 he formed his own orchestra and gave concerts "à la Strauss". When Tivoli was started in 1843 Lumbye engaged to lead the orchestra there and continued with it troughout his life. His great popularity is based on his compositions around 700 works by mostly polka, waltzes, marches and gallops. He has also toured extensively with the orchestra, blah. Hamburg, Berlin, Vienna, St. Petersburg and Sweden, and his chapel orchestra was highly appreciated both Stockholm and Gothenburg.
